1. Golden Rules of Heavy-Duty Transmission Maintenance and Technical Monitoring

Transmission maintenance is not only going to a mechanic when the system fails and the gears lock up; it is taking protective steps on time that will preserve the mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic balances inside the system.

Correct Transmission Oil Selection and Periodic Replacement Schedule

Transmission oil is the lifeblood of this massive mechanical box. By forming a pressure-resistant film layer between the gears, it prevents direct metal-to-metal contact, friction and overheating. It also allows the synchronizer rings to grip at the ideal rate and perform speed equalization.

• Oil Quality and Correct Viscosity: Specification-approved oils determined by heavy-duty vehicle manufacturers (Scania, Volvo, Mercedes-Benz, MAN, DAF, etc.) for each transmission type should be used. In heavy-duty vehicles, fully synthetic 75W-80 oils are generally preferred, or for heavier load and construction site conditions, oils in 80W-90 (API GL-4 / GL-5) standards with high-pressure (EP) additives are preferred. Since heavy-duty transmissions take a large volume of oil, a small leak may not be noticed at first. However, if this leak increases under load on a long road and the transmission oil drops below the critical level, group shafts and bearings will remain without oil, weld together due to high heat and the transmission box will become completely unusable.

Clutch Usage Discipline (For Manual Vehicles)

In heavy-duty vehicles with manual transmission, when a gear change is to be made, the clutch pedal must be pressed all the way down, fully. Gear shifts made with half clutch cause the synchronizer rings to wear rapidly due to excessive friction and the gears to collide with each other and shed metal shavings. In addition, keeping the vehicle in gear while stationary and holding the clutch pedal pressed for a long time consumes the life of the clutch bearing and pressure plate fingers. The correct method is to immediately shift the vehicle into neutral when stopped.

Correct Gear Selection, Engine Torque and RPM Compatibility

The engine torque and transmission ratios of a heavy-duty vehicle carrying tons of load must be operated in complete harmony. Forcing the vehicle at very low RPMs, uphill in a high gear (lugging the engine), places a massive torsional load on the transmission main shaft and gear flanks. Never Changing Direction Without Completely Stopping the Vehicle

Before engaging reverse gear (R) or before shifting from reverse gear to forward gear, the vehicle must be completely stopped and the movement of the wheels must be allowed to reach zero. Due to the weight and inertia of the heavy-duty vehicle, trying to engage the reverse gear while the vehicle is rolling forward, even very slightly, causes major gear breakages and shaft shearing inside the transmission.

• Incorrect Towing and Recovery Procedures: When a heavy-duty vehicle stranded on the road due to transmission or engine failure is towed by another vehicle, the cardan shaft (driveshaft) must absolutely be removed. Otherwise, since the engine is not running, the main oil pump of the transmission will not rotate and lubrication will not be performed. However, the gears will rotate at high speed with the movement coming from the wheels. Transmission gears rotating without oil will melt from high heat within a few kilometers, weld together and the transmission will completely burn.
